Why can't I ever get that right...

[She approaches the table to glance down at the cake.]

It's... really toasted for a white cake.

Alright. [Unaware of Hikaru's distress Umi leans to pick up the cake from the table and examines it.]

...Let's see the recipe you used first. Do we still have ingredients left?

Ah-- We should still have enough, let me find it.

[and you never will be aware of it Umi. But she jumps up to get it from under everything and hold it up for her]

[No, she won't notice: she's far too busy going over the cake trying to find some good points.]

We're keeping this to test-sample later. I think it may still taste good, despite everything.

...Now let's see. Let's start over and go step by step. [Heads into the kitchen.]

[Hikaru watched her intently-- It reminded her of something, but -- Oh. The lasagna thing. She smiled a little and followed her]

...Step by step. Okay.

[Umi moves around the kitchen gathering the ingredients, together with bowls and other utensils for the lesson. Then heads for the oven.]

First let's get this thing preheated! Around 300 and so degrees will do. Did you set the rack in the middle level first?

...Middle level? [Hikaru gets the blankest look on her face. I think we've discovered the problem, captain.]

[Opens and closes her mouth a couple of times, without saying anything. Then, simply points at the oven and opens it.]

There are three levels here, see? If you get it too high the cake will... Um.

Oh, I get it.

[Gives Umi the most sheepish look. She was... kind of embarrassed.]

I-i didn't think to change it.

Well, cheer up! If that's the only part you got wrong you actually did pretty good!

Did you butter the pan thoroughly?

Sure I do! See? [She grabs a pan and reaches for the butter, knowing that Hikaru will probably want to do everything herself, as it's her gift for a friend.]

And did you put waxed paper around the edges too?

Mhm, I did. [And she took that butter and pan, going at it like a trooper! >D]

Great! Then I think you got everything else right-o! [Steps aside to watch Hikaru go about it, feeling ridiculously proud of her efforts.]

What did you do next?

Ah.. next... [Hikaru puttered around for a moment while she finished the waxed paper. where did those instructions go]

I know I got the bowls ready to mix in and started measuring everything.

So you got your butter, sugar... Then your egg whites... [Umi surveys the ingredients, considering how carefully Hikaru picked them and tried to follow the recipe.]

You did put a lot of effort into this, didn't you. Like you did before...

Because it was for that boy, huh...

[She smiled, even more at Umi realzing that yeah, she did put effort into this]

Mm, I did.

[And then nearly dropped the egg in her hand at that comment fjklasjdf UMI WHY WOULD YOU EVER]
